FAOT

The Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado is on right now. It is billed as an international event and features performers from Cuba, Chile, Uruguay, Canada, USA, Cyprus, Spain, Colombia, Mexico and Norway. There are performances going on in many cities in the state of Sonora, so pretty much wherever you live you can get to see some of the entertainment. All of the information is on their site and if you are in the State of Sonora during the next week, I suggest you find a venue and go to see some of the performances. All performances are free as the festival is sponsored by many levels of government and culture.

On Saturday evening we went with some friends to the auditorium to see the guitar ensemble. They put on an excellent show and we really enjoyed it. After the show we stopped at our favorite torta stand for some good food. An enjoyable evening.

Handicapped Parking Space Sensors

Some students from the Instituto Tecnológico de Hermosillo have developed an alarm that will sound when someone parks in a handicapped parking space. Handicapped people will be the only ones with the transmittors to turn off the alarm which will sound 13 seconds after someone parks in the handicapped space.
The city is hoping within the next 20 months to install these sensors in the downtown handicapped parking spaces. The first one has been placed in front of the Consejo de Discapacitados.
If I understand correctly there was some kind of contest and the students of the eighth semester of careers in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Systems were the winners and they also competed at a regional level and won that also.
A good idea in my mind as long as they are not vandalised.

Winter Scenes In Guaymas

Just a few pictures taken on a walk around the neighborhood the other day.

I got a chuckle out of this place. Chicken in your car. Just drive up and order a grilled whole chicken.

These are photos of what you can expect to see on a January winters day when walking down the street here.

Flowering trees.

Fruit laden trees.

And of course palm trees.

Makes a wintery days walk quite enjoyable.

Guaymas School Goes Green

Last week a group called Greenscool came into one of the improvished colonias in Guaymas called Fatima. Their idea was to recycle some solar panels from the well off tourist oriented community of San Carlos about 15 miles away from us. Their intent was to install these recycled panels on the roof of the school in Fatima to assist with their financial restraints and also to teach the children about being "green". In this poor community the idea of being "green" is a new one, as most of their time and thought is put into survival.
You can go to their site to read more about the project and see photos, you can also go to Patagonia The Cleanest Line to read their article on it.
According to the Guaymas government site this will be the first school in the country to generate their own power.

Tribute To Composer Rosendo Montiel Álvarez

On Saturday evening we went to the Civic Auditorium where they were holding a concert as a tribute to the Guaymas composer Rosendo Montiel Álvarez. Before the concert they had had a ceremony at Calle 11 in order to rename the street after him. Quite an honor.
Senor Álvarez was born in Guaymas and was one of 8 children in the family. He left here for Mexico City at the age of 17 to make his fortune.
His songs have been recorded by such people as Rubén Fuentes. There is more than 450 of his works that have been recorded and some works have as many as 80 versions recorded.
He has been given various accolades in various cities and on Saturday Guaymas honored him also. His biography in spanish is here , it is easily translated if you are interested by using Google translator.
The tribute began with a slideshow of his life and some recorded interviews and then he did a song. His family was introduced and ascended the stage. After that some speeches and various things were given to him. They then sat down and the concert began. There were groups from Guaymas, Obregon and Hermosillo who did a range of his compositions.

I don't know how many people the auditorium holds but it was packed with all seats filled and all of the flights of stairs holding people also. Way over capacity! Everyone enjoyed the show which lasted from 4 PM until almost 7 PM.
After the show the city put on a show at the dancing lights water fountain set to his compositions. It wasn't to begin until an hour after the ending of the concert and we were tired of sitting so opted to go home rather than waiting for the fountain show. I am sure it was packed with people also.

Update On Rojo

Not a lot been going on around here lately, the calm after Christmas and before Carnaval.
We went to a meeting in the park on Sunday that I had heard about on the TV news. On Monday Roy went to try and find the office that we needed from the meeting. He couldn't find it and our landlord wasn't home so I went across the street to the little store and asked the owners if they knew where it was. After some discussion they knew where it was and I was told to hop into their car and they would go there. She drove us there and was even going to wait for us while we did our business. We told her we could get a bus home rather than have her wait. Man, people are so good to us, can't believe that. Anyway after much discussion we managed to get our business done. Good deal.
Yesterday I stopped off at Cynthia and Mikes, along with Bliss and we had a visit with them before my spanish class.
Rojo hasn't been around everyday for his food. There is a hot little number in the neighborhood somewhere and he has been following his new girlfriend around lately. Not too interested in food, he did show up one day though and gobbled it down before quickly heading back up the street. Doggy love!

Random Pictures

Some random photos Roy took while he was on a bike ride yesterday.

Pretty bouganvillea.

They are still working on the malecon and have gotten as far as the Fishermans Statue. It looks
odd not being close to the water now after the filling has been done.

Servicio De Baño (Bathroom Service)

At one of the stops the bus made on our trip home from Mazatlan I needed to use the bathroom. Usually you pay your 3 pesos, (this covers the paper, soap and towels) and go to do your business. At this particular one they handed me a ticket after I paid. I just took it and continued on my way. After I sat back down on the bus and looked at it I had to laugh. It gives the address of the stop and then breaks down the 3 pesos cost (about 30 cents). The basic cost was 2.61 pesos, the IVA (tax) was 0.39 pesos and the total cost was 3 pesos. I got a chuckle out of this as it probably cost that much just to print the ticket. I thought it was pretty funny.
