Bread Recipe

Bread Recipe
Ok, Pamela, here is the recipe for the bread.
This has to be the easiest bread recipe I have ever used. I have been using it for years, ever since they came out with so called "instant" or quick rising yeast.
2 Hour Bread or Buns
  • 3 cups water (lukewarm)
  • 8 tablespoons sugar
  • 6 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons "instant" yeast (fast rise)
  • 2 eggs
  • enough flour to make a workable dough (7-8 cups)

Mix yeast and 4 cups of flour. In a separate bowl whip eggs, sugar, oil and water. Add yeast/flour mixture and blend well; add remaining flour and salt.

The recipe doesn't say this; but I knead it until the dough is nice and smooth and feels ready, (you will know when it gets there).

Let rise for 15 minutes. Punch down, do not knead. Let rise for another 15 minutes, punch down and form into either bread or buns, put into greased pans. Let rise for 1 hour.

Bake in a 350° F. oven for 15-18 minutes for buns, longer for bread.

This will make about 4 to 5 dozen buns depending of course on how big you make them or 2 to 3 loaves of bread.

Remove from oven and enjoy with fresh butter. Yummy.

I'm Back

I'm Back
I haven't actually been anywhere, except hanging out in bed and on the recliner. I have been fighting a nasty cold for over a week now and it seems to be leaving finally. I haven't really been out of the house hardly during this week, so therefore nothing much to blog about.
I got a little energetic the other day and made a pumpkin pie with whipped cream and a couple of dozen raisin tarts. Very tasty. Today I felt like baking so made some buns and a couple of loaves of bread. Nothing like the taste of fresh bread right out of the oven. Yum, Yum.

Sunshine On The Sea Of Cortes

Sunshine On The Sea Of Cortes
Here's a video I took while we were housesitting in San Carlos. Today it is cloudy and gloomy, it rained this morning. I thought it was a good day to post this.
I love the way the sun sparkles on the water. Enjoy and stay warm wherever you are.

One Reason We Moved

One Reason We Moved
Here is just an example of one of the reasons that we moved from Alberta, Canada.
It is kind of a yucky day here or I should say morning as the sun is now coming out. It was cloudy and only 18° C. here this morning with a tiny breeze. It was not a nice morning. I was huddled in my quilt and we had the electric heater running.
On the other hand, this is what it looks like close to Lloydminster, Alberta right now, courtesy of the AMA road camera in the area. It is -5° C. with snow and a NW wind of 35 km/hr.. Guess I will quit whining about our weather. You could say, and be correct, that this is one of the reasons we moved to Mexico. Enjoy your day, wherever you are.

World Mayor 2008

World Mayor 2008
I was surfing around this evening and found this site about a contest called "World Mayor". Apparently nominations were put in for the 2008 award last year, then votes were taken to cut the list down from 820 to 50. Imagine my surprise when I read that our mayor of Guaymas, Antonio Astiazaran, made the short list of 50. There were only 2 on the Latin America section from Mexico and the other one is the mayor of Hermosillo, the capital of our state of Sonora. Wow, way to go Sonora.
If you are interested you can find the site here World Mayor 2008 and put your vote in for 1 person in each world area.

Allans Birthday Party

Allans Birthday Party
We had been invited to Allans birthday party yesterday afternoon. We made the long trip downstairs and joined the adults that were sitting around visiting. The children were either jumping on the trampoline, a Christmas gift, or playing fooseball (sp?). Everyone was having a good time. Lots of snacks everywhere, dinner and cake later and of course a goody bag full of dulces, (sweets). A good time was had by all.

There are events going on all week here for the Festival Dr. Alfonso Ortiz Tirado . There are some things that we would like to go to; but as we are both fighting nasty colds, I am not sure if we will attend anything or not. I think this is the first bad cold that I have had since the winter of 2005 and it is sucking away all my energy. Last night when we got home from the party, I felt feverish and my throat was really sore and Roy isn't feeling much better. Just feeling yucky in general. I think that we may just stay home and take it easy.

A New Rose

A New Rose
Sometimes I think the hardest part about blogging is trying to figure out what to put in that "title" box.
Thursday was the day that I go to the orphanage, with the other ladies for the english classes with the children. As usual, it was a fun and interesting afternoon.
Unfortunately one of the restaurants in San Carlos has closed down, so yesterday they had a sale of some of their things here in Guaymas. Some of us went to see what was being offered and we all managed to get something. I picked up a couple of pie and cake pans in sizes that I was missing and also some foodstuffs. Then we went shopping downtown. We split up for awhile as I had to look for a birthday gift for the landlords grandson, whose birthday fiesta is tomorrow afternoon. I found a spiderman with some "oozing venom" and an ugly looking accomplice. Hopefully this is gross and ugly enough to make his 8 year old boy mind happy. I got it wrapped in matching spiderman wrapping paper and all the bows etc., that they put on the wrapping here. Looks pretty, as they always do, when you go to one of those places that do the wrapping for you. They do such a good job and are so reasonable I don't know why you would ever bother doing it yourself. Besides, nothing that I have ever wrapped has ever looked this good.
The wrapped gift, cost of wrapping, 12 pesos or about $1.20

Today I had an appointment out in San Carlos at 11 AM, so we decided to go out early and have breakfast at Marias Pizza. We visited a bit with our friend and by the time we were done eating it was time to head for the appointment. By the time I was done with that it was 1 PM so we headed in the direction of home with a stop off at a plant nursery. I picked up a few petunias and a really pretty rose with a wonderful fragrance. The rose was a bit less than $4.00 and the petunias were almost 80¢ each. Once we got home I transplanted everything so we have a bit more color on the patio now. It has been looking a bit drab since I chopped off all of the Jamaica a few days ago.

The new rose.

Girls Day Out

Girls Day Out
This morning around 8:30 AM, five of us "girls" jumped into a vehicle and headed to Obregon (Cajeme) for a girls day out shopping. We headed down highway 15 and made a quick stop to check out a second hand shop in Vicam. It didn't open until 10 which so we had 10 minutes to kill. We headed over to the local corner store to grab a coffee while we waited. While we were standing around outside having our drinks we chatted with a couple of young entrepreneurs. They were just waiting for someone to come along that needed their windows washed, it was a slow morning for them so they had time to chat with us. Shortly after 10 we headed back to the shop and it was still closed so we gave up and headed on down the road.
We arrived in Obregon and began our search for funky little second hand shops. We got directions for a couple and actually managed to find them. We didn't purchase a lot; but had some fun.
Finally tummies grumbling we found a chinese restaurant and had a tasty, filling lunch. I had shrimp in agridulce sauce and shrimp fried rice, other dishes were shrimp in salsa picante and another dish that I have forgotten the name of. We had enough food for double the amount of people so doggie bags were the order of the day, in case you are thinking food poisoning here, there was a plug in type cooler in the vehicle. Hunger satisfied, we again were on the hunt for the ultimate shopping experience. Not too much materialised and we ended up at a Bodega Aurrera and Home Depot, skipping the Walmart. I purchased some kitchen things and some tomato and geranium seeds so did not actually spend the family fortune.
A fun day was had by our multinational group, (1 from USA, 2 Canadians, 1 from England and 1 from Uraguay) and it was agreed that we should plan another outing with a different destination for the near future. Can't you just imagine that strange accents that we all inflicted on the poor ears of the spanish speakers we were communicating with? I am sure it was comical for them. As it was a shopping trip I didn't take the camera along, I just didn't want to be bothered with it.
It was cloudy and foggy this morning and quite chilly; but turned into another lovely sunny day.

Rest In Peace, Andee

Rest In Peace, Andee
During the course of a normal day I read many blogs online and a good majority of them are written by people living in Mexico. It is usually an enjoyable experience; but today I have a sad occurance to tell you.
One of the blogs I read on a daily basis is/was My Life In Chacala and also her gardening blog Gardener In Chacala Mexico . Her blogs were interesting and her pictures were lovely, she was a "straight shooter" and blogged about things as she saw them. She also helped out a lot of the people in Chacala by assisting them in renting out their places to tourists.
She was also a regular contributor on the Lonely Planet Thorntree Travel Forum, Mexico Branch .
I am sorry to say that Andee passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2008. She will be missed by the blogging and online community.
My sincere condolences to her family and friends. May you rest in peace Andee.

January In Guaymas

January In Guaymas
This afternoon we went over to San Carlos, the art league was having their annual show, so we decided to have a look at what was being offered. We had a look around and there were some interesting paintings; but nothing that jumped out at me and screamed, "buy me". So we headed home.
We are going out to our favorite torta place for supper so I need to finish this up quickly.
Just a couple of pictures to show what is happening with some of the plants in January.
I have picked some of the Jamaica pods off to give to Ciro/Irene and thought I would take a photo of the last big plant before I denude it. The pods are sure pretty and I can see how they would make a very bright, colorful juice.
The bouganvillea is pretty right now.

Día De Reyes

Día De Reyes
I am a little late posting this; but as they say better late than never.
January 6th is Día de Reyes (3 Kings Day), the 12th day after Christmas or Epiphany. Here it is common to eat a special bread on that day called, Rosca de Reyes. It is a sweet bread and is in the shape of a wreath. It has sweet/candied fruit on it and in it and is very good. The "catch" to eating this bread, other than the calories, is what is also inside of it. In every bread there is a "baby", it is to symbolise the baby Jesus. Whoever gets the baby is supposed to host a party on February 2nd, Día de la Candelaria or Candlemas.
I happened to be down at Ciro and Irenes and Irene offered me some of this bread. I, laughingly said, "no, I don't want that in case I get the baby". We all had a laugh and Irene assured me that she had already gotten the baby in this particular bread. She gave me a big piece for Roy and I and I went home. Naturally, I couldn't just let it sit on the counter so cut a piece. The knife seemed to tear the bread at a certain point and when I looked closer, sure enough there was "the baby". I had a good laugh and then went downstairs and knocked on Ciros door. When they answered the door, I just held up the baby. We all had a good laugh and then Irene went and got her baby to show me. I said that I guessed we would be having a good party on the 2nd with 2 babies in the same bread. It was funny. If you are ever here around 3 Kings Day, I suggest that you try the bread, as it is tasty.
The "baby".
Since G./F. arrived on Friday it seems that we have been doing nothing but eating. Yesterday Irene wanted us all to have lunch with their family. She was going to do an all seafood meal. She knows I am interested in cooking and asked me if I would like to come and watch some of the preparations. Naturally, I said yes.
I went down and they were already busy in the kitchen. Nancy was making bacon wrapped, cheese stuffed shrimp. I have already made these; but I stuffed them with grated Chihuahua cheese. She was using little strips of cream cheese and it was much easier to stuff the shrimp. I had trouble keeping the cheese inside while wrapping it with the bacon, so using the cream cheese overcomes this problem.
Irene was busy making a crab dish. She had cleaned the crab shells, and then washed them with soap and bleach and then rinsed them off. The bleach step is very important she told me, to prevent illness. She then mixed the cooked crab meat with mayonnaise, it looked and tasted at this point like a crab salad sandwich filling. She then stuffed the shells with this mixture. After stuffing them she lightly beat an egg and then put the egg over the crab stuffing in the shell, then she coated the egg with breadcrumbs. To cook this she put the shells in a frying pan and spooned hot oil over the mixture in the shell. Basically what she was cooking was the egg/crumb mixture. They came out of the pan with the crumbs golden brown, the crab itself was warm; but not hot. Very attractive presentation and very tasty. While we were busy cooking, well Irene was and I was watching, Irene and I had a very interesting chat about the differences between pensions in Mexico and Canada and other things, very enlightening.
The menu included: fish soup, coco shrimp, breaded shrimp, cheese stuffed/bacon wrapped shrimp, the crab, seafood ceviche, followed by seafood cocktail. The seafood cocktail was served after the main course and by that time I was too full to have one; but Irene had graciously allowed me to taste all the ingredients before they went into the cocktail, it was a combination of many things of which I cannot remember all the names.
G./F. had wanted to take us out for dinner last night before they caught their bus back to Yuma. We were all too full to go out for another big seafood meal which I think had been the plan, so we all decided to just go to the torta place instead. When we got downstairs, we convinced part of Ciro/Irenes family to go with us. Then Irene told us that she had prepared everything to have gorditas. We felt bad that she had gone to all that work so back inside their home to eat again. I have to confess that I only had a glass of coke, instead of eating. We are used to eating a large meal at lunchtime and only eating very little in the evening so neither Roy or I were hungry. Ciros family does the same; but most of them managed to eat something anyway. G./F. seemed to enjoy the gorditas.
After the meal was done it was time for G./F. to head for the bus depot to catch their bus north. We drove them there, with not too much time to spare; but they already had purchased their tickets so only needed to sit and wait for the bus to arrive. We said our goodbyes and came home to relax. A busy few days. I hope that their bus trip went smoothly and didn't seem too long and that they enjoyed their stay here. We hope their flight home to Canada on Saturday goes well.

Dredging In The Marina

Dredging In The Marina
The other day when we went out in San Carlos, we stopped off at one of the marinas to show G./F. around. It is also one of my favorite stops as I like to watch the pelicans.
They have a small dredging machine (I am sure this machine has a proper name; but I don't know what it is), on a little barge. They were busy dredging and loading the debris into little baskets on another small barge. After the baskets were full, a boat pulled and pushed it into place close to the shore. Here they were hooked up to another machine and then taken and dumped. We have seen them doing this before; but I had never had the camera with me at the other times. It is a small operation; but apparently gets the job done.
Full baskets being pulled to the machine on shore.

Getting pushed into position.

Handing the lifting ropes over to get lifted off.

Cruz de Piedra and Las Guasimas

Cruz de Piedra and Las Guasimas
Ciro/Irene asked Roy and I, G. and F. if we would like to go with them to Cruz de Piedra and Las Guasimas today. Ciro and G. and F. went to the tianguis first and when they returned we all piled into 2 vehicles to make the trip. There were 11 of us altogether so we definately needed the 2 vehicles.
We headed out of Guaymas on highway 15 going south, through Empalme, with a stop to pick up beer and another stop to pick up coca colas. Past KM. 98 where you can get your car permits for the rest of the country and a few more miles down the road. I am not exactly sure how many miles, as I really wasn't keeping track of it. Anyway at a certain point we turned off the highway onto a road going into the desert. We crossed a cattle gate and kept on going, on a bouncy road across the sand. Cruz de Piedra is a shrimp farm and we drove past/through part of the farming area. There was a sign for a restaurant, La Shaka and this was our destination. We all piled out of the car, wandered around for a bit, pulled out the cokes and beers and sat down to order. One of Ciros sons explained the menu, which was quite extensive, to G. and F. and everyone decided on what they wanted to order.
The food began to arrive and seemed to never stop arriving. Sorry, I was too busy stuffing my face to take any photos of the food; although F. did. I will have to look at her photos and see if they turned out or not. We were in the shade under a palapa roof so it was difficult taking photos. The food was excellent, we have everything: ceviche, shrimp cocktails, raw oysters, breaded shrimp, a couple of whole fried fish, other shrimp dishes, crab tostados and much more. It was all delicious and at the end we all left the table stuffed. We laughed and joked around and spent an enjoyable couple of hours over our meal. By the time we left the place was pretty much packed and there were lots of tables there. A couple of the photos are not very good as I accidentally changed the camera mode and this one was set for night photos; but you can get an idea of the scenery anyway.
Part of the restaurant.

Eating over, we were ready for our next stop. Irene wanted to go to Las Guasimas to get some crab for tomorrow. She has told us that she is making a seafood dinner tomorrow for all of us. Yum, yum. We drove back to the highway and headed down the road for a few more miles to Las Guasimas.
Las Guasimas has been kind of a joke between Ciro/Irene and us since the first winter we were here. Then we had gone to Empalme and taken a bus from Empalme to Las Guasimas. This was not a highway bus; but more of what people used to call a "chicken bus". There were no animals on the bus; but Ciro teased us about travelling with the chickens, pigs, etc.. They just laughed at our sightseeing?? tour, as Las Guasimas is just a very small Yaqui indian fishing village and there is really not anything much to see there. When we had arrived there the first winter on the bus, we had asked the driver what time he would be back and he told us, "tomorrow". Needless to say we had not gotten off the bus, there is no where to stay there. If we hadn't asked we would have ended up sleeping on the beach overnight. Ciro and Irene like to tease us about our "trip" there anyway. Today was a bit different, we stopped at a couple of places looking for crab, were sucessful, did the scenic tour of the town and then were on our way back to Guaymas and dessert at our apartment.
Waiting on the tide at Las Guasimas.

Arriving back home everyone came upstairs and we had coffee, cokes, cinnamon buns and pumpkin torte for desert. I had found a couple of cans of pumpkin in San Carlos while we were there, so had made the pumpkin torte, which I love. I had cinnamon buns in the deep freeze so took them out, as I know that Ciro/Irenes family really enjoy them. Stuffed again, we sat and visited for awhile before everyone headed downstairs to their own homes. Irene had been going to do Carne Asada for dinner; but everyone was so full that we all opted to put it off for another day.

Watching You, Watching Me

Watching You, Watching Me
While we were having our morning coffee, we heard a taxi cab pull up and G. and his wife,F. hopped out. We were expecting them; but weren't sure what time they would arrive as they were taking the bus. We had met G. last year through the blog and then he came and spent 2 weeks in the ground floor apartment, so we got to spend some time with him and get to know him in person. This year his wife came along with him, which is nice and they are staying in the apartment again. Great to see him again and nice to meet his wife, also.
I had an errand that I had forgotten to do while we were in San Carlos the last 2 weeks, duh, so we decided to go there today and get it done, as I had to send the person the info. soon. We asked them if they would like to come with us and take some time to show F. around. They did, so after going for shrimp tacos for breakfast we all did our own things until time to leave. We headed to San Carlos and then the Marina and the Mirador (outlook), we then drove home through the Miramar area and did some sightseeing. It's a tough life, ain't it?
It was cloudy today, which is unusual for here and we actually had some raindrops for a few minutes, very odd. It felt chilly to us; but shortly after the sun did come out and Roy and I eventually took off our jackets. G. and F. were much warmer than we were I think; but then they are from Alberta where it is just a bit cooler right now than it is here.
Naturally, I had taken the camera and couldn't resist taking some pictures of the pelicans, which I love.
This fellow was really giving me the eye! Not sure who was watching who. "Here's looking at you kid".

Not a very good picture; but sure shows the colors on his beak. He was having an altercation with a buddy.

I never get enough of this view from the Mirador.

We're Home

We're Home
We gathered up all our things that we had at the home in San Carlos and brought them home, by the time we had put everything away it was time to head to the airport to pick up "grandma". The plane was only a couple of minutes late, thank goodness it wasn't a re-run of picking up our Baja homeowners, where the plane was over 3 hrs. late. She arrived in fine form and we drove her home, got her settled and then we also headed home.
When we arrived home, everyone was outside so there were hugs and Feliz Años all around. Good to be home.
This was definately the easiest housesit that we have done, and I am thinking that there may be others coming up in the future. We had an opportunity to do an 8 month housesit in Tulum, from the end of February to the end of October. The home apparently is just being built and would have very few furnishings in it. We decided that 8 months was just too long to be away from home; although it would have been nice to have seen that area; I am sure that something else will come up. We are now emailing with some people who live in Patzcuaro, Michocan, if their regular housesitters can't make it, we may go there for a month this summer, we will see.
Here are some pictures that I took on our dog walks in San Carlos, peeking over walls in some cases. Well.....you never know what you might see.
Pretty detail on an outside wall.

Nice yard.

Close up of the guard at the home.

I think this might be Saint Francis, the saint of gardening.

I like the look of this planter high up on the wall; although gardening through the bars can't be much fun.

Sunrise In San Carlos This Morning
Today was our last day of house sitting in San Carlos. It was very cloudy this morning and there was a beautiful sunrise. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did. None of the photos have been retouched or changed in any way, the colors were just fantastic.
