Dia de los niños, (childrens day) was on Wednesday so I am a little late with this posting. Our neighborhood was quiet during the day and I had almost forgotten about it when I went to painting class in the afternoon.
When I got to La Casa de la Cultura I was greeted by a full courtyard. There were large sized replicas of fish, trucks, etc. built out of cardboard and painted, set around the perimeter. Very pretty and fun looking. A piñata was hanging above, just waiting for the bashing to begin. The courtyard was filled with chairs and there were many families seated listening to entertainment. There were maybe 6 musicians playing guitars and singing and then later some young girls started singing.
I saw the teacher and asked her if there was class and she said that there was for us; but not for the children, which are in the class before us.
As we were listening to this, there were sounds of horns honking out on Serdan Ave.. I went out to look and there was a parade of pickup trucks filled with beautifully dressed children.
We started our class to the sounds of merriment, shortly thereafter the piñata was beaten to a pulp. The children were having a ball.
Some of the children that are in the early class stopped in to visit and see what we were doing, before returning to the fun happening in the courtyard.
It all ended with cake of course, our teacher left and returned with a piece of cake for all of us. Yum.
As I was walking to the bus stop after class the hot dog carts were doing a great business. Families with their fancy dressed children from the parade were enjoying a snack before heading home. One little girl was leaning forward while eating, trying to keep the mustard, ketchup and mayo from dripping on her full length gorgeous white dress.
No pictures as I didn't have my camera with me.
